Overview

Introduction

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is a state-of-the-art museum located in Fustat, Cairo. It is the first museum in the Arab world focusing on the entirety of Egyptian civilization, from prehistoric times to the present day.

With its extensive and diverse collection, NMEC offers visitors a comprehensive journey through Egypt’s rich and varied history.

History

The idea for the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization was conceived in the late 20th century, with the aim of creating a museum that would tell the full story of Egyptian civilization.

The foundation stone was laid in 2002, and the museum officially opened its doors in 2017.

Designed by the Egyptian architect El Ghazzali Kosseiba and Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, the museum combines modern architectural techniques with traditional Egyptian design elements.

One of the museum’s most notable events was the grand transfer of 22 royal mummies from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square to the NMEC in April 2021, known as the Pharaohs’ Golden Parade.
